Carol Elizabeth Moseley Braun is an American diplomat, politician, and lawyer. She is notable for being the first African-American woman elected to the U.S. Senate, representing Illinois from 1993 to 1999. She also served as the first African-American U.S. senator from the Democratic Party and the first female U.S. senator from Illinois. Later in her career, she served as the United States Ambassador to New Zealand and Samoa.
