Fethullah Gülen was a Turkish Muslim scholar, preacher, and the leader of the Gülen movement. He was known as an influential neo-Ottomanist, Anatolian panethnicist, Islamic poet, writer, social critic, and activist-dissident. From 1959 to 1981, Gülen worked as a local state imam in Turkey. Later in life, he became a centrist political figure in Turkey and eventually lived in self-exile in the United States from 1999 until his death in 2024.
