Mullah Mohammed Omar was the founder and first supreme leader of the Taliban in Afghanistan. He led the organization from its inception in 1994 until his death in 2013. During his reign, the Taliban controlled most of Afghanistan, establishing the First Islamic Emirate. Following the September 11 attacks and the subsequent American invasion, Omar went into hiding, evading capture until his death.
