Nawal El Moutawakel is a Moroccan former hurdler, celebrated for her historic win in the inaugural women's 400 metres hurdles at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles. Her victory marked the first Olympic gold medal for Morocco, as well as for any Arab, African, or Muslim woman. She is currently a vice president of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), continuing her involvement in sports administration. El Moutawakel was also named the Minister of Sports in Morocco in 2007.
