Thaksin Shinawatra is a Thai former politician, businessman, and former police officer. He served as the 23rd Prime Minister of Thailand from 2001 until he was overthrown in a military coup in 2006. A controversial figure, Thaksin implemented populist policies that gained him widespread support among rural populations but also drew criticism from the urban elite and military establishment. Since 2009, he has also been a citizen of Montenegro.
