Brian Bernard Cowen is an Irish former politician who served as Taoiseach (Prime Minister) of Ireland and Leader of Fianna Fáil from 2008 to 2011. He represented the Laois–Offaly constituency as a TD (Teachta Dála, member of the Irish parliament) from 1984 to 2011. Prior to becoming Taoiseach, he held several ministerial portfolios, including Minister for Finance and Tánaiste (Deputy Prime Minister). His time as Taoiseach coincided with the global financial crisis and a severe economic downturn in Ireland.
