During the Burundian Civil War, he was involved in the rebel National Council for the Defense of Democracy – Forces for the Defense of Democracy. After the conflict, he joined the Burundian Army and later held various political positions under President Pierre Nkurunziza. His rise to power was marked by Nkurunziza's endorsement as his successor.
