His premiership was the shortest in the country's history, lasting only 15 months. A member of UMNO, he was unique in being the only prime minister without a leadership role in the governing party and the first born after Malaysia's independence. He also holds the distinction of being the first opposition leader to become prime minister and the first to serve without a deputy.
