Than Shwe is a retired Burmese military officer who held significant power in Myanmar for nearly two decades. He ruled Myanmar as the second chairman of the State Peace and Development Council and commander-in-chief of Defence Services from 1992 to 2011. He concurrently served as the eighth prime minister of Myanmar from 1992 to 2003. His rule was characterized by authoritarianism and suppression of dissent.
