Violeta Barrios Torres de Chamorro is a Nicaraguan politician and publisher who made history as the first female president of Nicaragua, serving from 1990 to 1997. Her election marked the end of Sandinista rule and the beginning of a new era of national reconciliation and economic reform. Prior to her presidency, she was a member of the Junta of National Reconstruction from 1979 to 1980, following the overthrow of the Somoza regime. She played a significant role in promoting peace and democracy in Nicaragua.
