Valentina Tereshkova is a Russian engineer, politician, and former Soviet cosmonaut. She holds the distinction of being the first woman in space, a feat she accomplished on June 16, 1963, aboard Vostok 6. During her solo mission, Tereshkova orbited the Earth 48 times and spent nearly three days in space. She remains the only woman to have flown a solo space mission and the youngest woman to have flown in space under the international definition of 100 km altitude.
