William J. Burns, born in 1956, is an American diplomat who most recently served as the Director of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA). Prior to this role, he was the U.S. Deputy Secretary of State and served as acting Secretary of State for a day in 2009. Burns retired from the U.S. Foreign Service after a distinguished 32-year career. He also served as president of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace.
